Hidden Hormone Disruptors in Your Home

by Ashika Deskins, ND

Many everyday household products contain endocrine-disrupting chemicals that interfere with hormone balance, metabolism and reproductive health. While several of these chemicals have been banned in Europe, they are still commonly used in the U.S. Here are five major culprits to be aware of and safer alternatives to consider:

  1. Plastics & Canned Foods (BPA & Phthalates): Found in plastic bottles, food containers and canned goods, bisphenols (BPA, BPS, BPF) and phthalates can mimic estrogen and interfere with hormone function.
    • Safer Alternative: Switch to glass or stainless steel for food storage and search for products sold in glass when possible.
  2. Conventional Cleaning & Personal Care Products (Parabens & Triclosan): Parabens (preservatives in cosmetics) and triclosan (antibacterial in soaps and hand sanitizer) disrupt estrogen and thyroid function. Triclosan is banned in Europe but still in some U.S. products.
    • Safer Alternative: Opt for paraben-free skincare and natural cleaning products like vinegar and baking soda.
      • Check out our Product Spotlight below featuring products by The Body Deli. Their skincare and personal care products are made with organic, raw, and plant-based ingredients, offering a clean alternative to conventional products. Unlike many mainstream brands, The Body Deli avoids parabens, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, and other ingredients banned in Europe due to their potential impact on hormone regulation. Their full size products are also packaged in glass, avoiding exposure to chemicals found in plastic. By choosing high-quality, naturally derived formulations, you can nourish your skin while protecting your overall well-being.
  3. Nonstick Cookware & Food Packaging (PFAS, aka “Forever Chemicals”): PFAS (perfluoroalkyl substances), found in Teflon pans, fast-food wrappers, and microwave popcorn bags, are linked to thyroid disorders and reproductive harm.
    • Safer Alternative: Use cast iron, stainless steel or ceramic cookware, and avoid fast food packaging.
  4. Processed Foods & Artificial Additives (BHA, BHT, & Potassium Bromate): These preservatives are used in cereals, packaged snacks and bread but are banned in Europe due to links to hormone disruption and cancer.
    • Safer Alternative: Choose whole, minimally processed foods and check ingredient labels for additives.
  5. Pesticide Residues on Produce (Atrazine & Ractopamine in Meat): Atrazine, a pesticide banned in the EU, has been linked to estrogen disruption and reproductive issues, while ractopamine, used in U.S. livestock, is banned in over 160 countries.
    • Safer Alternative: Opt for organic or locally sourced produce and hormone-free meats whenever possible.

Small swaps can make a big difference! By reducing exposure to these common hormone disruptors, you can take an active step toward protecting your hormonal health.
