What is a BIA? (and Why Do I Need One?)

by Tara Levy, ND

BIA, or bio-impedance analysis, is a method of assessing your “body composition” – the measurement of fat in relation to lean body mass.  Research has shown that body composition is directly related to health, and that a normal balance of body fat is associated with good health and longevity.  In addition to measuring body fat, the BIA also calculates fluid levels in the body, cellular membrane health, and metabolic rate, all of which are useful to determining overall health status.  It is an excellent addition to anyone’s annual health and nutrition assessment.

The BIA is a great preventive tool that allows us to detect early imbalances in body composition, thus allowing for early intervention and prevention of disease.  BIA also allows us to measure progress as one incorporates diet and lifestyle changes.  I have been offering BIA tests in the office for many years, but realize that many of our newer patients were not aware of this great tool for health optimization!

Getting a BIA test requires a 15 minute visit, or it can be incorporated into your next appointment.  If you are interested in getting a BIA, please contact the office know and we will get you the information needed to be properly prepared (not difficult, but important).
