Food On-Demand!!

by Tara Levy, ND

One of the advantages of living in the bay area is our access to local, organic, healthy, nutrient-dense food.  Arguably the heart of the “eat local and organic” food movement is right here!  However, with our go-go-go lifestyles it can sometimes be hard to get a nutritious AND delicious meal made at home.  These past three months with a new baby has brought me face-to-face with this dilemma — I forgot how difficult it can be to get anything done with a newborn in your arms all day!   So I have been exploring some of our East Bay prepared food gems, and want to share these great resources with you!

1.  Three Stone Hearth.  A collective that takes it’s impetus from the teachings of Weston A. Price, TSH runs a kitchen in Berkeley that prepares foods weekly for pick up and delivery.  Hearty meat stews, cultured krauts, and long simmered broths are just some of the weekly delicacies.  Last week I had a gelatina that knocked my socks off!  To learn more, check out their website threestonehearth.com.

2. Spoon Rocket.  A rapidly expanding delivery service in the east bay, Spoon Rocket prepares 2 meals daily — one meat and one vegetarian — using organic, fresh, locally sourced ingredients.  With delivery times of about 10 minutes, and hours from 10 am to midnight, this is one of the most convenient things going.  I’m waiting for them to come through the tunnel, but right now their delivery area runs from east of Lake Merritt to Albany, and even SOMA in San Francisco.  spoonrocket.com.

3.  Easy Bay Pot Pies.  On this rainy (finally!) day, pot pie sounds just about perfect.  One of my favorite comfort foods.  So when someone brought me a chicken pot pie from the women at Easy Bay Pot Pies I was in heaven.  All sustainably raised meat, organic veggies, and lots of love go into their pies.  Chicken, veggie, and rabbit versions available, frozen for pick up in Oakland.  facebook.com/Easybaypotpies

4.  Standard Fare.  Coming from a beautiful kitchen in West Berkeley, Kelsie Kerr prepares incredible organic fare served in custom-made ceramic dishware for pick-up.  Not opened yet, so I can’t yet attest to it’s amazingness, but the woman behind this project is a Chez Panisse alum and all-around super woman, so I am eagerly awaiting the opening and following her progress! Scheduled to open in the next month. standardfareberkeley.com.

I know most of these selections are west-of-the tunnel specific, but as I live in Oakland, these are the ones I know personally and have experienced — particularly in the past 3 months!  Would LOVE to know more options in Lamorinda, Walnut Creek, and other east-or-the tunnel spots.  If you know some, please share!  Or maybe one of you wants to create one?
